Yamaha’s AV Controller app has transformed countless iOS and Android devices into wireless remote controls since its introduction, opening the door to networked home entertainment for many Australian households.

In a major update, version 3.0 of the AV Controller app boasts an optimised interface for iPad and Android tablets. Notably, the app now adopts enhanced navigation, improved functionality and customisation features for tablets, allowing frequently used icons to be moved to more accessible locations within the app, similar to moving apps around on an iPad or iPhone.

The result is a home theatre experience tailored to the specific needs of the user.

The AV Controller app’s reconfigured multi-pane layout takes advantage of the iPad/Android tablet screen size enabling simplified, single-window operation in either landscape or portrait orientation. Users are also able to customise the order of input and function icons as well as personalise the wallpaper with an image of their own.

A navigation menu in the left margin provides access to the receiver’s most used functions whilst a status bar showing input and DSP mode prominently occupies the top of screen. Yamaha’s popular Music Play feature, the ability to stream music from the handheld device directly to the receiver, is also represented by an icon conveniently located in the top right of screen for quick access.

Compatible with Yamaha’s range of network Blu-ray players, the AV Controller app’s redesigned user interface now displays all controls and options on a single iPad or Android tablet screen for even greater ease of use and user-friendly operation.

Version 3.0 of the AV Controller app is available as a free update from the App Store and Android Market.

Since its introduction, Yamaha’s AV Controller app has transformed countless iOS and Android devices into wireless remote controls for Yamaha’s network receivers.

Version 2.0 of the app, released last month, further enhances network functionality by enabling users to wirelessly stream music from a mobile device to the Yamaha network receiver – all without having to utilise a dock. When an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Android device is connected to the same network as the receiver, the AV Controller app pushes music directly from the phone or tablet to the receiver.

‘Music Play’, the name given to this new feature, expands the available music content made accessible over a network (PC, Mac, NAS, Internet Radio) to now include content from portable devices as well. Operation is seamless and intuitive with users able to navigate content on their phone by album, artist, playlist, etc. When a song has been selected, the receiver turns on automatically and begins playback with album artwork able to be shown on any display devices connected to the receiver. Additionally, Music Play also allows the creation of playlists for Android devices.

The update is available to both iOS and Android users and does not require any firmware updates to the receiver. What’s more, Music Play is backwards compatible to Yamaha’s previous line-up of ’67 Series of receivers with Ethernet connectivity.

Music Play is available as a free update for the AV Controller app, from the App Store and Android Market.

Uncompromising performance, in every aspect, demonstrates the underlying philosophy behind AVENTAGE. Yamaha introduces five new receiver models and an updated Blu-ray disc player to the AVENTAGE Series in 2011, offering unrivalled functionality and home entertainment.

This year, Yamaha’s finest engineers were set a challenge to better the groundbreaking AVENTAGE Series which established a new era of home entertainment when it was introduced in 2010.

Improving on a benchmark series may seem like a difficult proposition, however with dedication and commitment to delivering unsurpassed quality, Yamaha’s new AVENTAGE Series raises the bar to dramatic new heights.

Key performance, networking and control specifications featured on select models from the debut AVENTAGE range are inherited by all models in the new series. These include expanded network set up and control capabilities, and support of Yamaha’s AV Controller app. Available as a free download from the iTunes Store, the AV Controller app provides simple and intuitive control of AVENTAGE receivers and Blu-ray player from anywhere in or outside the home. Playing music stored remotely on a PC, Mac or network attached storage (NAS) device is now as simple as browsing music content, selecting the desired song and pressing ‘play’ on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. A version of the app for Android devices is now also available from the Android market.

The new AVENTAGE Series introduces two 9.2 channel receivers to the range for the first time in the RX-A3010 (150W x 9), which is expandable to 11.2 channels utilising an external amplifier to power front speakers, and the RX-A2010 (140W x 9). The 7.2 channel RX-A1010 (110W x 7), RX-A810 (100W x 7) and RX-A710 (90W x 7) models complete the AVENTAGE receiver line-up, adding two new models at the entry point to the series to enable a wider audience to access the high-end home theatre market, offering unprecedented value for features.

Channel expandability, particularly on the RX-A1010 and above has been dramatically improved. With the redesigned Intelligent Amplifier Assignment, the internal amplifiers initially designated to drive the main speakers can now be utilised for other speakers, while an external amplifier powers the main speakers. There’s also added ability to bi-amp speakers using internal amplifiers, along with many other configuration alternatives.

The RX-A3010 and RX-A2010 incorporate the exceptional HQV (Hollywood Quality Video) Vida video processing chipset to ensure spectacular HD and SD video performance. The HQV Vida processor employs powerful noise reduction functions and resolution enhancement functions to present SD content to look like HD. Other features offered across the new line of AVENTAGE receivers include HD Audio decoding, HDMI with 3D and A.R.C. (Audio Return Channel) and front panel HDMI inputs.

Perfectly complementing the AVENTAGE receiver range, the BD-A1010 Blu-ray player provides a true cinema experience at home. Designed to take advantage of high-end audio set-ups, support of high definition audio formats such as SACD and DVD-Audio is now featured. Yamaha’s SCENE function provides seamless integration with an AVENTAGE receiver range allowing single-button push functionality. As a network media player, the BD-A1010 streams video content (including MKV, AVI, DivX, MP4 and MPG formats) effortlessly to the user’s home theatre system.

A review of the specifications for each AVENTAGE model will impress. However an audition will provide a true understanding and appreciation for Yamaha’s premium range of home entertainment products.

Yamaha’s new ‘71 Series receiver line-up expands with the addition of two new network capable models to the range. The first receiver in the range to offer 7.2 channels, the RX-V771 delivers versatile functionality that will satisfy the entertainment needs of the entire family. Powering black gloss speakers and dual 10” subwoofers as part of Yamaha’s YHT-1096AU home theatre package, the RX-V771 delivers first-class home entertainment and exceptional value in an integrated home theatre solution.

Yamaha’s powerful RX-V871 network receiver pushes connectivity to the next level boasting an additional two HDMI inputs – bringing the total to 8 in/2 out, ensuring simultaneous connection of all AV components in the home.

Building on the network functionality offered by the RX-V671 and compatibility with Yamaha’s AV Controller app, the RX-V771 and RX-V871 both feature a second simultaneous HDMI output, an additional sub-woofer output, Zone 2 ‘Party Mode’ and advanced multipoint Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimiser (YPAO) for professionally calibrated audio in any size or shape room.

As with other network capable receivers in the range, connecting the RX-V771 or RX-V871 to a home network enables seamless access to music remotely stored on a PC, Mac or network attached storage (NAS) device. Using Yamaha’s AV Controller app, enjoying your favourite music is as simple as browsing the music library stored on the home computer from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and pressing ‘play’. Album artwork is displayed on your iOS device while familiar control gestures ensure intuitive navigation of your music library. Additionally, by utilising a simple broadband connection, Internet radio provides instant access to tens of thousands of radio stations from around the world.

Two HDMI outputs on each model enables two displays to be connected simultaneously so you can watch TV on a display panel during the day then drop a projector screen down for an evening movie session without changing connections on the back of the receiver. The ‘Zone 2’ function is also enhanced with the inclusion of ‘Party Mode’ on both models. The ‘PARTY’ button on the receiver’s remote provides a convenient way to play music in multiple listening zones simultaneously. Party Mode is particularly useful for playing background music throughout the home when entertaining. In addition, volume can be controlled independently in each zone using the receiver’s remote, providing versatile control of your party’s soundtrack.

Advanced YPAO multipoint technology analyses the acoustic qualities of up to eight different points of the room, as opposed to the conventional YPAO system which utilises a single location. These additional measurements effectively ensure a bigger ‘sweet spot’ for larger audiences.

The RX-V771 and RX-V871 have a recommended retail price of $1,299 and $1,499 respectively.

Included in the YHT-1096AU home theatre package, the RX-V771 receiver is combined with two NS-555 floor standing speakers, four NS-333 surround speakers, a NS-C444 centre speaker and two 270 watt YST-RSW300 subwoofers. The YHT-1096AU has recommended retail price of $3,999.

Yamaha’s RX-V671 receiver is the first model in the new ’71 Series line-up to feature networking functionality, and is also featured at the core of the 7.1 channel YHT-996AU home theatre package.

The RX-V671 provides access to music stored on a PC, Mac or network attached storage (NAS) device when connected to a home network. Using Yamaha’s free AV Controller app, you can navigate a music library stored on the computer upstairs for example, without leaving the comfort of the living room.

Sounds complicated? Operation is both simple and intuitive using Yamaha’s AV Controller app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Streaming music from the home computer is now as simple as browsing through your music library, selecting the desired song and pressing ‘play’ on your iOS device. Utilising a simple broadband connection, the AV Controller app will also let you browse tens of thousands of Internet radio stations from around the world.

The ‘simple operation’ theme is continued through the use of Consumer Electronics Control (CEC). CEC enhances the integrated home theatre experience by enabling the communication of control signals such as ‘power on’ and input selection via HDMI to devices such as a CEC compatible television and Blu-ray disc player. Together with Yamaha’s ‘SCENE’ function, simply pressing one button will activate the connected components, automatically select the correct DSP setting and initiate playback. HDMI Device Control completes the picture by enabling navigation of Blu-ray disc menus using the RX-V671 remote control. The RX-V671 remote control now operates the entire AV system without the need for preset remote control codes.

Yet another key feature of the RX-V671 receiver is its versatile ‘Zone 2’ function delivering the flexibility of having two independent listening environments, both of which can be controlled by the AV Controller app. Entertain guests on the deck by playing music through your NS-AW592 outdoor speakers while the kids enjoy a movie in surround sound in the lounge room.

With 90 watts delivered to each of the seven channels, the RX-V671 network receiver boasts six HDMI inputs (including one located on the front panel), one HDMI output, direct digital connection of an iPhone or iPod via the front USB input, premium HDMI video upscaling to full HDMI 1080p, HD Audio decoding with 3D CINEMA DSP and discrete amplifier configuration. Utilising front presence speakers (two speakers sitting near the top corners of the television) Yamaha’s 3D CINEMA DSP provides a three dimensional sound field which adds depth and height to the soundstage. For movies, this provides precise overhead localisation of sound for effects such as helicopters flying overhead, while for music sources, 3D CINEMA DSP reproduces the feeling of being in a large auditorium.

Delivering exceptional sound and flexible configuration options, the RX-V671 powers striking ‘piano black’ gloss speakers tuned specifically for big home theatre sound as part of the YHT-996AU home theatre package. Two NS-555 floor standing speakers, four NS-333 surround speakers and a NS-C444 centre speaker complete the YHT-996AU home theatre package with a powerful 270 watt YST-RSW300 subwoofer to deliver a premium home theatre experience.

The RX-V671 receiver and YHT-996AU home theatre package are available now and have a recommended retail price of $1,099 and $2,999 respectively.

Imagine sitting on the back veranda with a cup of coffee, wanting to listen to music through your NS-AW592 all-weather speakers while the kids are inside watching episode one of The Wiggles – Season Three. There’s a Mac sitting in the home office with over 100GB of music and your entire collection of DVD and Blu-ray movies including The Wiggles which you recently transferred from DVD to your Mac. In the living room you have Yamaha’s new RX-V671 network receiver and BD-S671 Blu-ray player which is streaming episode one of The Wiggles for the kids.

So, back to the veranda and your coffee. Using Yamaha’s new AV Controller app that you downloaded for free to your iPhone, you select the RX-V671 receiver and activate ’Zone 2’ which you’ve configured as your outdoor speakers. From the iPhone app, scroll through the music library stored on your Mac, select the song you’d like to listen to and press ‘play’. Your favourite tunes start streaming out to the veranda.

The kids are now screaming out for the next episode of The Wiggles. Simply use the AV Controller app to switch to the BD-S671 Blu-ray disc player and scroll through the movie library on your Mac to select episode two. Now sit back, relax and enjoy your coffee while the kids watch The Wiggles inside. Life is easy with Yamaha’s integrated home entertainment solutions.

For Yamaha, ‘networking’ means remotely accessing music and movies stored on a Mac, PC or network attached storage (NAS) device from anywhere in the home. Yamaha network receivers and Blu-ray players combined with the AV Controller app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch achieve this by providing simple operation of a seamlessly integrated home entertainment system.

Yamaha’s new range of network capable home theatre products starts with the easy-to-operate, 7.1 channel RX-V671 receiver (also available in the YHT-996AU home theatre package). Offering more than just a great home theatre experience, the RX-V671 allows remote access to music stored on a Mac, PC or NAS device from any room in the home. With the aid of a simple broadband connection, Internet radio is also instantly available providing access to tens of thousands of radio stations from around the world.

The network-ready BD-S671 Blu-ray disc player serves as the perfect complement to the new range of receivers. For those who have movies stored on their computers as well, the BD-S671 streams 1080p video and HD audio effortlessly over a home network. In addition to supporting playback of Blu-ray 3D and all other current HD formats, the BD-S671 features BD Live capability for interactive services and YouTube Leanback compatibility allowing YouTube video content to be viewed on the big screen.

By downloading Yamaha’s new AV Controller app from the iTunes store, controlling the RX-V671 and BD-S671 couldn’t be easier using an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. What’s more, it’s free. The AV Controller app provides intuitive operation of Yamaha’s network capable receivers and Blu-ray players from anywhere in our outside the home. Playing music stored on the computer upstairs is now as simple as browsing the remotely stored music library on your iPhone, selecting your favourite song and pressing ‘play’.

Welcome to Yamaha’s integrated home.

Yamaha’s 2011 range of home theatre packages combine the new ’71 Series receivers with new speaker options. The result is a comprehensive selection of packaged solutions that will appeal to a range of different users.

Let’s take this opportunity to have a look at the first seven home theatre packages in some more detail.

At the entry point of the range, Yamaha’s YHT-296 is a great value home entertainment starter pack that combines an RX-V371 receiver with compact black gloss speakers. Delivering affordable yet dynamic audio and video performance with iPod compatibility via the optional YDS-12 dock, the YHT-296 is placed to be Australia’s most popular home theatre package in the coming year.

Ideally suited to modern decors, Yamaha’s YHT-396AU includes the versatile RX-V471 receiver, NS-P285 speaker pack and two slim Yamaha speaker stands. Featuring direct USB connection of an iPod or iPhone via the front panel and 105 watts through each of the five channels, the YHT-396AU is ideal for those looking for great sound in an elegant design.

For serious home theatre performance, Yamaha’s YHT-496AU delivers premium audio through the larger wooden slimline speakers, particularly for music sources with a robust bass output by the powered QD-Bass subwoofer. Featuring a convenient front USB port for direct connection of an iPod or iPhone, the YHT-496AU delivers impressive performance with a design to match.

The first 7.1 channel home theatre package in the new Yamaha range is the YHT-596AU. Black gloss speakers, featuring the same finish as Yamaha’s renowned range of pianos, combine with the RX-V571 receiver to deliver a premium home theatre experience. Solid wood speaker cabinets provide a natural overall sound while a further two HDMI inputs (bringing the total to six) lets you connect all your HD devices.

Yamaha’s YHT-696AU delivers full-bodied audio regardless of the source. The first home theatre package in the line-up to offer floor standing speakers, the YHT-696AU utilises an RX-V371 receiver to power the dual 6.5” drivers of the main speakers. Sure to appeal to those looking for a versatile home theatre set-up, the YHT696AU presents powerful home theatre performance.

The YHT-796AU bundles the RX-V471 receiver and Yamaha’s new NS-140 speakers to produce the ultimate mix of design and performance. The rich and natural sound produced by the NS-140 speakers is ideal for both home theatre and music while adding to the aesthetic appeal of most modern interiors. In addition, the centre channel and surround speakers can be easily mounted to reduce floor clutter.

Last but not least, Yamaha’s YHT-896AU delivers seven channels of serious home entertainment for the full surround sound experience.
Yamaha recently launched its new ’71 Series receivers with the release of the first three models in the range – the RX-V371, RX-V471 and RX-V571.

The underlying theme for Yamaha’s feature-packed ’71 Series is ‘Simple Operation, Seamless Integration’. What does this mean exactly? Broadly, the focus is on enabling multiple home entertainment components and devices to work together while at the same time streamlining operation to become easier and more intuitive for the user.

With the popularity of iOS devices, integrated iPod and iPhone connectivity now comes standard on all receiver models in the’71 Series. On the entry-model RX-V371 ($499 RRP), an optional YDS-12 dock is required for navigation of an iPod or iPhone using the receiver’s remote control. For the RX-V471 ($699 RRP) and above models, direct USB connection is supported which means that by simply connecting the iPod or iPhone to the USB port on the front panel, a digital signal is transmitted directly to the receiver minimising noise interference and ensuring the highest quality audio possible. Also featuring on the RX-V471 and above, a Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows navigation of iPod content visually via a TV with the ability to also display album artwork.

On all models, user-friendly functionality is enhanced through the use of Consumer Electronics Control (CEC). CEC builds on the integrated home theatre experience by enabling the communication of control signals such as ‘power on’ and input selection via HDMI to devices such as CEC compatible TVs and Blu-ray disc players. Together with ‘SCENE’, simply pressing one button will activate the connected components, automatically select the correct DSP setting and initiate playback. On the RX-V471 and above, HDMI Device Control delivers the ability to navigate Blu-ray disc menus using the Yamaha remote control, which means the remote control for your receiver now operates the entire AV system.

Impressive picture quality on all three of the models is achieved through 1080p compatible HDMI, and support of Deep Colour (30/36 bit), x.v.Colour, 24 Hz Refresh Rate and Auto Lip-Sync compensation. The RX-V571 ($899 RRP) has both analogue and HDMI video upscaling to full HD 1080p from sources such as DVD to ensure a great picture every time.

Featured on the RX-V471 and RX-V571, Yamaha’s 3D CINEMA DSP with virtual presence speakers (two speakers sitting near the top corners of the TV) adds height and depth to the sound stage. For movies, this provides precise overhead localisation of sound for effects such as helicopters flying overhead, while for music sources, 3D CINEMA DSP reproduces the feeling of being in a large auditorium.

Each receiver in the range offers powerful surround sound. The RX-V371 delivers 5.1 channels of surround sound with 100 watts through each channel. The RX-V471 produces 105 watts over each of the five channels while the RX-V571 has 7.1 channels rated at 105 watts per channel. On all models, Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit DACs and HD Audio decoding combine to produce clear and dynamic audio from all sources.

These three new receivers from Yamaha underpin the new ’71 Series. Simple to operate and seamless integration makes these receivers definitely worth consideration for powerful and versatile home entertainment.

Sounding as good as it looks, Yamaha’s PDX-31 is the easiest and most convenient place to park your iPod or iPhone when you’re home.

The PDX-31 houses a 15W x 2 digital amplifier and an 8cm full-range cone plus bass reflex port which delivers robust power, rich bass and clear, concert quality sound. An AUX-in terminal on the back allows a PC, Mac or other MP3 player to connect at the same time as an iPod or iPhone via stereo mini jack. There’s even an Auto Blend function that plays both sources back at the same time so you can listen to the news with background music from an iPod or iPhone.

The PDX-31 automatically comes alive and begins playback when an audio source is received so there’s no need to turn the dock on or off. In addition, the clever PDX-31 remembers the volume level when removing an iPod or iPhone so that the next time you dock it, the volume is conveniently set to that level. If the volume is accidentally turned up, the PDX-31 instantly reacts by lowering the sound level, protecting both you and the speaker from a sudden loud burst of music.

Completely compatible with iPod (5th generation), iPod classic, iPod nano, iPod touch and iPhone, the PDX-31 is available in a colour to match your room (dark red, light grey or black) and has a recommended retail price of $199.

When it comes to audio there isn’t much that Len Wallis (from Len Wallis Audio – Lane Cove, Sydney) hasn’t seen. Having been trading for over 33 years (and a strong supporter of Yamaha that entire time) you can bet he has seen just about everything when it comes to audio – almost. Len Wallis Audio was has been rated as one of the top five hifi stores in the world by UK magazine High Fidelity and was the first company outside the US to win a Global Installer of the year award from CEDIA; a coveted prize amongst home theatre installers. Yamaha Music Australia’s Managing Director, Hiroyuki Wakamatsu, has also presented Len Wallis with an extraordinary achievement award for his 30 years of service to the audio industry back in 2008, an award signed by Yamaha’s global President Mitsuru Umemura. We caught up with Len to ask him about Yamaha, the industry and what trends he is seeing in the market.

Hiroyuki Wakamatsu, Len Wallis, Simon Goldsworthy

YMA – How long have you been in the AV industry for?
LW – I started working for a company called MS Sound in the Sydney suburb of St. Peters in 1970.

YMA – How long have you been running your current store for?
LW – 33 Years – we opened in 1978.

YMA – What are customers asking for when they come into your shop?
LW – There is huge interest in three facets of our industry. Anything to do with 0’s and 1’s. Digital streaming and digital storage is high on everyone’s hit list. Aligned to this is Digital Radio – there is still a lot of interest in this as a source. Custom; a considerable proportion of the people coming through the front door are carrying plans with them. They know that they can have all the audio and video they want seamlessly moved around their home. This is also leading to a high level in home automation and the associated sub-systems (lighting control, security etc.) and we are still getting a lot of interest in dedicated Home Theatres.

YMA – What area of our industry is going to shape your business moving forward?
LW – As well as custom, automation and home theatre we don’t expect to be selling source components in a few years, everything we want to hear and see will be available online, and most things that we want to store will be in the ‘cloud’. However people will want immediate access to all of this from anywhere in their home, or via portable devices when away from the home. This will necessitate a simple yet effective system of distribution and control. Once people become used to having all forms of media immediately available at their fingertips I believe that there will be a return to performance quality. At the moment the consumer (and the industry) is all about access and convenience, giving rise to iTunes, MP3 etc. Once this is commonplace consumers will move back to a performance base for viewing and listening.

YMA – Is there any new technology or product that you think will change or has already changed our industry?
LW – Many people would not consider Steve Jobs to be part of the Hi-Fi industry, but through iTunes, the iPod and Apple TV he has had a profound influence on what we listen to and watch, and how we go about it. The iPad is also redefining how we control the things that we listen to and watch. These products have also had a major influence on the cost of doing these things. Despite what has happened in the recent past (there has been a sharp decline in performance quality in many cases with recent technologies) I believe that these changes will continue to go forward, and in a positive way. There is no doubt that the musical horizon for many people has been vastly widened; many will now look to get the best out of this new material.

YMA – How long have you been selling Yamaha for? And what are some of the reasons why you continue to sell Yamaha?
LW – Len Wallis Audio has sold Yamaha continually since we opened in 1978. However I first started selling Yamaha in the early 70’s when I was working for MS Sound and the then distributor of Yamaha – Rose Music – received their first shipment of audio equipment, including their famous ‘ear’ speakers. Rose Music was not familiar with the Hi-Fi industry and dropped in some stock to see if we could do something with it. The reason we continue to sell Yamaha is because we have never been given reason not to. When we first opened it was with a select number of brands, all of whom at the time offered a quality product. These brands included Acoustic Research and Advent loudspeakers, plus Sansui, Aiwa, Teac, Akai and Yamaha electronics. With the exception of Yamaha, who have remained remarkably consistent during the last 33 years, all the other brands have either disappeared or bear no resemblance to the companies they were in 78’.

YMA – What further role do you see Yamaha products playing in consumers’ homes in the future?
LW – I believe that the future for Yamaha is very rosy. They dominate the AV market, a market which will remain strong for many years. They have come strongly back into the Hi-Fi market, and at the same time overseas they are developing innovative new products like NeoHD.

YMA – What has been your favourite Yamaha product of all time?
LW – Tough choice – I have a great deal of respect for the CT-7000 tuner and the C2A pre-amp. I would have to say the NS-1000 loudspeakers (the ebony version.)

YMA – If you could have Yamaha produce any product, what would it be and how would it look, play, feel, interact, etc?
LW – I think that their multi-room system, MusicCAST, while it was not a success, was on the right track. While we have not had the opportunity to play with the later series, or the NeoHD range mentioned above, this pairing looks very interesting. Any product that can easily stream music and video, be it hard-drive based or internet based, around the home is on the right track. There will be a necessity for some time to have storage capabilities (there is a very large part of the population who has accumulated a considerable amount of physical audio and video material, primarily on silver discs.) This will need to be very simple to control, and at the same time offer a high level of performance.

YMA – Thanks for your time Len.

Waking up in the morning by the traditional “beep” alarm is certainly not the most pleasant experience – perhaps the reason behind the ‘snooze’ function – avoiding an elongated piercing noise. However often waking up to loud music has the same alarming effect on the body. Turning the volume down may be a simple solution, however there is always the danger that a soft volume level will not have the desired effect in waking people up! So Yamaha has come up with the answer. IntelliAlarm.

Yamaha’s IntelliAlarm is designed to gradually wake people up, resulting in a significantly calmer method of waking up in the morning. IntelliAlarm offers a “source” alarm and the traditional “beep” alarm providing alternative methods for waking up in the morning. The source alarm allows for iPod/iPhone or radio to gradually increase in volume. During the first stages of the alarm the audio source is filtered, reducing all high frequencies and slowly introducing the full audio spectrum as the unit increases in volume. The unit automatically selects the last song that was being played from the iPod/iPhone. Research conducted in Japan has shown that using this alarm mode is a more comfortable method for people to wake in the morning.

For those that require an abrupt jolt from sleep to get moving in the morning IntelliAlarm also comes with another innovative alarm mode that is a combination of the source audio and the traditional beep. This allows for the IntelliAlarm to use its audio filter to slowly fade in, waking you slowly. Then after three minutes of the source audio the “beep” alarm will sound ensuring that you are fully awake. There is also the traditional alarm mode of the beeping noise.

Yamaha’s IntelliAlarm is one of the more innovative ways to wake up in the morning, highlighting Yamaha’s commitment to innovation. IntelliAlarm is available Yamaha’s TSX-70, TSX-80 and TSX-140. For more information on these and any other of Yamaha’s clock radio’s click here.

It wasn’t so long ago that a pair of earphones was a pair of earphones. A black pair of ear canal draining earphones that were tough to keep in your ear, and let’s be honest we could probably get better sound from two tin cans strapped to the side of your head.

Come forward 20 years where the world is still round and consumers are slowly discovering (again!) the value of good quality audio. If you have read our article “1,000 songs in your pocket”, you know that the age of compressed audio meant many people had hoards of poor quality music files on their iPod or MP3 player. The synonymous white earphones that accompany every iPod were everywhere, and whilst these “free” pairs of earphones were fantastic for low quality audio listening, they struggled (and still do) with the higher quality audio tracks of today.

A good pair of earphones should fit comfortably into your ear. There should be no need for holding or constant adjusting of them once they are in your ears. The multiple earbud tip sizes that come with all good earphones ensure they fit perfectly inside of your ear.

The persistent complaints of ‘tinny’ audio should not suffice. Your earphones should be able to produce an expansive range of tonal qualities; from solid bass reproduction to the highs from a crescendo in an orchestra. All audio should be produced evenly with neither the high nor low end audio overtaking each other; they should compliment.

Your earphones should be easy to manage. There is nothing worse than searching through your bag only to find your earphones intertwined with the rest of your belongings. Quality earphones now have a cable management system and are made from thicker materials that do not bend and curl. This will ensure they last longer and you can easily access your earphones wherever you are.

Yamaha have a range of earphones currently available, from the vibrant Yamaha EPH-20 – available in five colours, to the natural sounding EPH-30, all the way up to the dynamic EPH-50 earphones. Read more about them here.

PS… If after reading this you still can’t part with your iconic earphones, a couple of the models mentioned above are available in white.

With the release of the TSX-140, Yamaha’s range of digital radio enabled desktop audio products has grown just in time for Christmas. For those of you who are still looking for a last minute gift, the TSX-140 heads Yamaha’s desktop audio range with its contemporary styling and impressive feature set.

With digital radio, CD, iPod & iPhone connectivity, USB and AUX inputs, the TSX-140 offers similar features found on other Yamaha desktop audio models. However, with strong design DNA and the added functionality of iTunes Sync, the TSX-140’s position atop this accomplished range is justified. iTunes Sync allows you to synchronise your iPhone (or iPod) with your iTunes account. Utilising an optional USB cable to connect the TSX-140 to iTunes, the TSX-140 will synchronise albums, update playlists, and podcasts as if it were connected directly into a computer. This allows the iPod/iPhone to synchronise whilst still charging and playing music via the TSX-140 from the CD, digital radio or AUX input.

The TSX-140 also offers Yamaha’s IntelliAlarm. IntelliAlarm has proven to minimise the abruptness waking up by slowly increasing the volume and frequency range over three minutes, ensuring users wake in the morning feeling as relaxed as possible.

The TSX-140 comes in three earth inspired tones, all of which have been chosen to blend in with a contemporary lifestyle. This stylish design, impressive set of features and connectivity is what places the TSX-140 atop Yamaha’s desktop audio range and makes it the perfect gift this Christmas.

The TSX-140 is available in Black, Brick and Grey and has a RRP of $649.

Christmas is just around the corner. Hopefully by now you have almost finished your Christmas shopping, or if you are like us, you are just about to start! At Yamaha we have some amazing gifts for friends and family that have arrived just in time for Christmas. These gifts have been best sellers all year and represent fantastic quality, brilliant design and overall value for money!

This year has been a huge year for digital radio. The ability to listen to your favourite radio station in near CD quality is a huge step forward. At Yamaha we have heavily embraced digital radio. Recently, we released the TSX-80; a compact clock radio that is available in three pastel colours and packs a sound above its small size. The TSX-120/130 continues its popularity based on its amazing sound quality, dual alarm and innovative space saving foot print. The newly released TSX-140 is a system designed for the modern home. All colours are based on earthy tones (Black, Brick, and Grey), allowing them to seamlessly melt into your home. On board is a direct iPod dock, CD player, digital radio, AUX input, and an iTunes sync feature.

iPod docks continue to sell well with iPods one of the most requested presents for Christmas. The PDX-50 was also one of the first docks on the market to also work with Apple’s iPad.

Yamaha’s MCR-040 stereo hit Australia in a big way this year. Offering a sound that is accustomed to larger stereos, the MCR-040 includes a digital radio, direct iPod docking, an AUX input and the ability to connect headphones. Available in ten colours the MCR-040 is a welcome addition to any Santa sack this Christmas.

With Christmas just around the corner Yamaha has added a new product to its popular clock radio range with the release of the TSX-70. Joining the TSX-130, TSX-120 and TSX-80 the TSX-70 promises to be a big hit this Christmas.

As with all of the other products in Yamaha’s clock radio range the TSX-70 employs Yamaha’s advanced DSP technology producing an astonishing extended stereo effect from an extremely compact unit. With iPod/iPhone direct docking, a 3.5mm AUX input and FM radio the TSX-70 ensures effortless access to your music, as well as offering different types of alarm modes to help you get out of bed in the morning. With the ability to choose between a source alarm mode, a “Beep” alarm mode or both the TSX-70 can cater for any type of morning person. The source alarm mode allows for iPod or FM radio to slowly fade up to volume allowing you to wake slowly to any type of music you wish. Alternatively the “Beep” alarm mode provides a more traditional alarm. However one of the great features of the TSX-70 is the ability to combine these features to have your source alarm slowly fade the music in where after 3 minutes the “Beep” will activate ensuring that you are fully awake.

The TSX-70 has been designed to have a classic retro look and is available in Blue, Beige or Brown to ensure it will fit seamlessly into any bedroom. With a RRP of $299 the TSX-70 promises to be a hit this Christmas.

With the emergence of the iPod and other MP3 players over the past decade most people have accumulated a substantial library of audio files on their PC or laptop. In the past these files have had to be transferred onto an iPod, MP3 player or USB stick in order to listen to this music through a high quality home theatre system. However with Yamaha’s new Network AV Receivers, this music can be streamed effortlessly over a home network directly to the receiver, saving you not only time and effort, but also storage space.

In addition, ever increasing hard drive space has allowed the storage of uncompressed, or lossless, audio file formats, such as WAV and FLAC 96/24. Again, in the past there were limitations in playing these lossless audio files through a high quality speaker system. However this year, all of Yamaha’s Network AV Receivers provide the ability to stream the above lossless audio formats through the home theatre system, making them ideal for music enthusiasts.

In a previous article we explained how to go about setting up both a wired and wireless home network. Once this has been completed streaming music between devices on the network becomes relatively simple. Detailed instructions are included in the links below that explain how to asjust some basic settings on a computer, this allows the Network Receiver to access the music files stored on it. In the case that a computer is shared by a number of people, the computer will allow users to choose specific folders that will be shared across the network.

The process of setting up a computer to share audio with a Yamaha Network Receiver differs depending on whether you are using a PC or a Mac. For further information on this select the relevant link below:

File sharing on Windows XP

File sharing on Windows 7

File sharing on a MAC

Media management software, such as Twonky Media, is available online and can be a useful way to simplify the sharing of media throughout a home network. Once installed, this software (compatible with all Yamaha Network Receivers) searches for music on a computer, hard drive, or Network Attached Storage Device (NAS), and sorts the ID3 tagged files into relevant categories, such as Artist, Genre, Album, etc. For someone who is not overly computer savvy, investing in media management software will help ensure that sharing music over a network is effortless.

Yamaha’s Network Receiver range consists of the RX-V1067, RX-V2067, RX-A1000, RX-A2000, and RX-A3000. Click here for more information on these models.

Over the past few weeks we have introduced you to the benefits of a Network Receiver and briefly explained how to set up a network. In this article we will go into a little more detail about one of the exciting features that a Network Receiver will allow you to access – Internet Radio.

The first radio stations to be broadcast via the net went live back in 1994. Since then stations all around the world have begun broadcasting on the internet and there are now over 14,000 stations available, with more stations being added all the time. Internet radio is now becoming increasingly affordable in an AV receiver allowing more people to enjoy its benefits.

Yamaha Network Receivers access these Internet radio stations by connecting to the vTuner database. vTuner allows the Network Receiver to list these stations in various categories to ensure selecting a station is extremely quick and easy. As discussed in our last article, once you have connected your receiver to your Network, accessing internet radio is as easy as pressing the ‘NET’ button on the receiver’s remote control until the internet radio is selected. From there all you have to do is select what station you want to listen to and the Network Receiver will stream it through your home theatre system.

Internet radio allows you to receive regular AM, FM and digital radio stations, along with live radio from all around the world. You could be listening to live coverage of a sporting event from Europe and quickly switch to a news broadcast from the US – the possibilities are endless. In the off chance that you happen to find a station that is not available through vTuner, all you have to do is log onto the vTuner website (www.vtuner.com) and suggest the station so they can add it to their database.

Yamaha’s Network Receivers come ready to access vTuner and after you have set up your Network streaming, radio stations becomes as easy as selecting Net Radio from the Network menu. The only hard part is going to be choosing which station, out of the thousands available, to listen to first!

Over the past couple of weeks we have discussed the benefits of a Network capable receiver, and how it transforms a receiver into more than just surround sound unit. A network AV receiver provides access to content outside the boundaries of our living room, such as the ability to listen to almost any radio station in the world over the internet, stream music from a computer through a home theatre system, and control the AV receiver using an iPad or iPhone utilising the built in Yamaha web browser control. In this article we will explain the basics to connecting an AV receiver to an existing network.

The two network set-up options we are going to talk about here are a wired and a wireless network. Many homes with an internet connection will have the required equipment to take advantage of the benefits of a network capable receiver which include; a wireless router, Ethernet cable, web browser, and a wireless access point (if you are connecting wirelessly).

A wired setup is the easier of the two options and ensures your receiver is constantly connected to the network. To add a receiver to a home network simply connect your router to the receiver using a Ethernet cable (See image below). The AV Receiver will automatically configure itself to work on the network (Utilising DHCP).

AV receivers do not come with wireless network capabilities on board so to connect them to a wireless network a Wireless Access Point (WAP) is required. The WAP will send and receive the wireless signal for the receiver and is ideal if it is too inconvenient to connect the receiver to the network via a direct Ethernet cable. A WAP can be purchased from most retailers that stock computers, laptops, and network accessories. Manufacturers of Wireless Access Points include Netgear, Dlink, and Linksys.

Before connecting the WAP to your receiver you will need to pre configure it to work on your local network. This process is generally simpler than setting up a wireless network and involves connecting it to a computer and configuring the WAP using the it’s set-up wizard. Once the WAP has been configured and connected to the network, connect it to your receiver using a short Ethernet cable (see image below).

By completing the steps above the AV receiver will now be connected to the network and provide access to internet radio stations from all around the world. For more information on Internet radio keep an eye out for our next article later this week.

Over the next couple of weeks we will provide further information the other additional benifits of a network capable receiver, including on how to set-up your computer (PC and Mac) for music streaming, and how to control a Yamaha Network capable receiver using a laptop, iPhone or iPad.

Until then, if you have any questions please feel free to list them below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
